What’s Global Citizen Music Festival?  

It is one of the most unique events around the world where art and activism conjoins to create a positive change in the society. It is one among the most popular events in the world where music is used as a tool to end poverty in the world. It is a call for action to aid areas around the world plagued by extreme poverty. The event was created in 2015 to mark the establishment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a “to-do list” of 17 tasks to end extreme global poverty by the year 2030.

The festival had its first stage in 2012 where prominent names from the industry like Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, John Legend, Band of Horses, K’naan, and Neil Young & Crazy Horse performed. The fest made headlines in global media and became a huge success in no time.

The 2015 festival, which was held on Central Park’s Great Lawn in New York City included performances by Beyoncé, Coldplay, Pearl Jam and Ed Sheeran. The event was blessed with special appearances and speakers including Stephen Colbert, Hugh Jackman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Vice President Joe Biden and First Lady Michelle Obama.

What’s Global Citizen?

Global Citizen is a movement of millions of people taking action to solve the world’s biggest problems. According to the team, “We work in support of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, 17 goals agreed by all countries to end extreme poverty, tackle climate change and reduce inequality by 2030.”

They reach their goal by designing and hosting campaigns to achieve a specific outcome in support of the global goals. Since 2012, Global Citizens have taken more than 5 million actions, and the campaigns – comprising grassroots actions, high-level advocacy, world-class events, media coverage, and partnerships with influencers, businesses and nonprofits – have resulted in 129 financial and policy commitments and announcements, set to affect the lives of up to 650 million people, claims their website.

The organisation concentrates on tackling issues mainly in eight verticals namely girls & women, food & hunger, education, health, water & sanitation, environment, finance & innovation, and citizenship.

What’s special in 2016?

The Global Citizen Music Festival 2016 is all set to be held on Central Park’s Great Lawn in New York City on 24th September. The event will have performances by people like Demi Lovato, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Major Lazer and Metallica as well as special guests Usher, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Ellie Goulding, Yandel and Yusuf / Cat Stevens.

The event will also include special appearances and speakers like Chelsea Handler, Deborra-Lee and Hugh Jackman, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, Salma Hayek Pinault and Seth Meyers.
